A road bridge has collapsed on railway tracks in western Russia, killing a woman and injuring another five people, including a child, local officials reported.

Footage of the incident posted on social media shows the metal and concrete structure of the bridge collapsing as a truck attempts to cross. Images of the scene afterwards show the remnants of the bridge strewn across a railway line as well as an overturned car and lorry.

Russia’s regional emergency ministry said three cars and a lorry were on the bridge when it collapsed, with four of those injured sent to hospital for treatment. Around 8,000 households were also left without gas as a result of damage caused to pipelines

The cause of the collapse of the Paninsky overpass, located in Vyazma, in Russia’s Smolensk region, is being investigated, regional officials said, with local media reporting old age as the likely cause. Residents have “repeatedly asked the authorities to repair the overpass”, the 112 Telegram channel said.

“My deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased woman,” Vasiliy Anokhin, the regional governor, wrote on Telegram.

He added that more than 160 emergency personnel were working at the scene through the night to restore the train traffic as soon as possible.
